The Opportunity
Engagement Type: 2 to 4 week paid audit with the option to extend into implementation work. This is a contract engagement designed for a senior, hands-on engineer who can quickly assess complex systems and deliver actionable insights.
We are seeking an experienced senior engineer to conduct a comprehensive audit and stabilization of Base's consumer mobile product and internal admin tool, HomeBase. The current system encompasses React Native, TypeScript, backend APIs, database-driven booking and payment workflows, notification systems, and Metabase reporting infrastructure. This is not a greenfield project—we need someone who can rapidly understand an existing, mature codebase, identify architectural and execution risks, distinguish critical issues from noise, and produce a practical, prioritized recovery plan.
What You'll Do
Conduct a thorough audit of the React Native and TypeScript mobile application, including user-facing features and related HomeBase admin workflows
Review backend API architecture, database models, and core business logic spanning bookings, guest management, cancellations, refunds, credits, and notification delivery
Identify technical debt, broken workflows, security vulnerabilities, obsolete code, missing test coverage, and performance bottlenecks
Examine Linear tickets and project artifacts, comparing planned development against actual implementation to surface execution gaps
Produce a comprehensive, prioritized technical recovery plan with clear rationale and resource requirements
Ship or directly supervise one meaningful stabilization fix during the engagement to demonstrate impact and validate recommendations
Recommend the optimal team composition needed for sustained recovery: mobile engineers, backend specialists, data engineers, QA automation, design, or fractional CTO support
Must-Have Requirements
Senior or staff-level React Native and TypeScript expertise: You've built and shipped production React Native applications at scale, understand TypeScript deeply, and can evaluate code quality quickly
Strong backend and database experience: Proven track record designing and debugging APIs, working with relational databases, and understanding data modeling trade-offs
Domain experience with payments, bookings, or operational systems: You've worked on payment processing, refund workflows, booking systems, marketplaces, membership platforms, or internal admin tooling
Ability to navigate ambiguous, complex codebases: You can read messy code, make sound engineering judgments under uncertainty, and separate signal from noise
Excellent written communication: You can articulate technical risks, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to non-technical founders, operators, and stakeholders
Comfort with incomplete specifications: You thrive in environments where requirements evolve and you must make decisions with imperfect information
Nice-to-Have Skills
Experience with Metabase, analytics platform cleanup, or data warehouse migrations
Track record migrating away from styling frameworks like NativeBase, NativeWind, or other inconsistent UI systems
Hands-on experience with mobile release pipelines, QA automation, push notification systems, and email workflow infrastructure
Prior experience in startup rescue, recovery, or stabilization projects where you've diagnosed and fixed systemic issues under time pressure
