Data Scientist (Contract)

About the Role

Epoch is seeking part-time data scientists to assist with groundbreaking AI research efforts. This independent contractor position involves comprehensive data gathering, technical analysis, and insights generation focused on AI models, data centers, and emerging technologies. You'll play a crucial role in building datasets that inform international AI policy decisions and advance our understanding of the AI landscape.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and analyze recent machine learning papers to extract critical details about model architectures, training methodologies, and performance metrics
• Track and compile benchmark scores across various AI models and systems
• Process satellite imagery and building permits to monitor and analyze data center locations and expansion
• Analyze financial disclosures, earnings reports, and news media for intelligence about AI companies and market developments
• Gather data on AI inputs, impacts, and infrastructure details from diverse sources
• Extract, compile, and accurately organize important technical and operational details
• Collaborate with the research team to create data insights and research products
• Report findings and engage in detailed discussions with your supervisor regarding analysis and conclusions
• Evaluate source reliability and maintain high standards for data accuracy and integrity

About You

The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in data science methodology combined with deep expertise in AI and machine learning. You should demonstrate:

• Excellent understanding of AI inputs, applications, and current industry developments
• Meticulous attention to detail in data collection and analysis
• Strong critical thinking skills and keen ability to assess information source reliability
• Proficiency in reading and extracting insights from technical literature and research papers
• Experience with data analysis, compilation, and visualization
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Work Structure & Location

This is a fully remote position available to contractors worldwide, with the exception of candidates working from mainland China. While we welcome applicants across all time zones, you should be prepared to attend occasional meetings during Pacific Time (UTC-7/8) working hours.

The role is designed as flexible part-time work, estimated at 10 to 30 hours per week. Depending on your suitability, availability, and interest in expanding your involvement, additional hours per week may be negotiated and considered.
