Job Description
About GiveWell
GiveWell's mission is to help people in need by researching the most cost-effective ways to save and improve lives. We share our work openly and direct donations to programs with the highest impact. We've grown from directing $1.5 million in 2010 to over $400 million in 2025, with projections to exceed $500 million in 2026. Tens of thousands of donors rely on our research to inform their giving.
The Role
We're seeking a Senior Accountant to own complex accounting functions at GiveWell, primarily revenue reconciliation and grants recognition. You'll bring deep expertise to complex reconciliations, serve as a thought partner to our Controller on process improvements, and mentor junior staff. You'll join our growing Finance team and report directly to our Controller.
Why we're hiring: GiveWell's rapid growth requires a stronger in-house finance team. Our Controller recently joined, and we're making foundational hires to transition from outside contractors to a robust internal finance function.
Key Responsibilities
- Own revenue reconciliation: Reconcile donations from multiple payment platforms including bank deposits, securities, and cryptocurrency to our CRM system for general ledger uploads and regranting to charities.
- Prepare quarterly grants reconciliation: Reconcile from the general ledger to our grants database, ensuring accurate liability recording, correct grantee attribution, proper fund allocation, and accurate net asset rollforward.
- Support close processes: Participate in close procedures including investment reconciliation and entries for complex areas such as lease amortization, intercompany grants, and accrued vacation.
- Support audit and tax compliance: Draft financial statement portions and footnotes, prepare Form 990 support documents, and work with auditors and 990 preparers alongside the Controller.
- Drive process improvement: Update workflows, particularly grants reconciliation, and serve as a thought partner to the Controller on building a more efficient and scalable finance function.
