Engineering Manager – EU
💰 $170,000 – $240,000/yrMarket estimate · not provided by the employer
Job Description
About This Role
Ashby is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and develop our growing European engineering team. Reporting to Colin, Director of Engineering Europe, you'll build a high-ownership engineering culture where software engineers write product specs, make product decisions, and drive projects end-to-end without breaking them into individual tickets.
Our Engineering Philosophy
We believe engineers are most effective when given total ownership of problems. Traditional processes often reflect a pessimistic mindset—boxing people into smaller roles to minimize risk. Instead, we're building an optimistic environment that trusts engineers to own and achieve meaningful work, with leadership staying out of the way when appropriate.
Your Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of 6–8 direct reports, focusing on individual performance, team culture, and skill development
- Coach engineers to thrive with increased ownership and autonomy
- Provide feedback on product and technical specs, helping engineers identify scope cuts and quality improvements (without making final decisions)
- Grow engineers capable of owning large, loosely defined projects with minimal intervention
- Contribute hands-on: debug customer issues, ship bug fixes, improve developer experience, and keep your engineering skills current
- Work on non-critical-path projects—such as improving data generation and simulation in demo accounts—to stay connected to the codebase
What We're Looking For
- Experience managing engineering teams and developing talent
- Strong technical background; you enjoy coding and staying up-to-date with systems
- Ability to think deeply about culture, process, and individual performance
- Comfort with ambiguity and an optimistic mindset about what engineers can achieve
- Collaborative approach to influencing product and technical decisions
